Ciao i miei amici!
Allora!
After eight days of hearing and speaking entirely in Italian for four hours a day, I can definitely say I’m making great progress…I think…maybe…well? As long as I stay focused, what do I need to get at the grocery store? OK, it isn’t quite that bad. We’re long past the deer in the headlights analogy. The instructors are doing a terrific job at keeping things fun and interesting. In fact, I’d say the class is barely under their control because we’re having so much fun. Besides, as long as we’re speaking in Italian, everything is good.
However, and it’s a big one, whenever we get into the real world and have to interact with real people–speaking rapidly–using unexpected phrases–not repeating–just being human–it doesn’t quite go as well as I’d like. Restaurants and cafes have been pretty successful for us. We seem to have the vocabulary figured out and often the servers are quite willing to chat us up in Italian knowing that we are there to study the language. Other situations are going to take a little more time. Sometimes I get it and sometimes I don’t. I know I’ll get there but it can still be a little frustrating.
Ciao!
